History of Runner's Corner (Continued)
Hawk's Commentary
At Runner's Corner, we not only hire runners to work at the store, but we make sure to hire really good people as well. We have had the opportunity to have some of the greatest people (and runners) in the world work for us over the years. Our belief is that runners are some of the best people in the world and we want our employees to be able to identify with the people they serve. I believe we have great employees, and although some of them are young, they love people and enjoy being around other runners. That’s what makes us different. Our employees are not taught to sell, but rather to consult and educate. We feel that making sure we are helping our customers improve their running is the best way to do things.
Running is a life altering experience, a way of life, and we want to be part of that. Our goal is to share the knowledge that we have in such a way as to leave the person that is new to running with a smile on their face and a new awareness to what we feel is the greatest sport and lifestyle on earth.
Golden’s Epilogue
The store is all I have known since I was ten years old. I remember being very young and working the store all alone. I remember running to work with my backpack on nearly every day after my workouts in high school. I remember moving to the Orem location and the very risky thing that was for our family, as was the day we decided to devote as much time and attention as possible to the store. The store has helped shape me in a way I don’t think could have happened any other way. I love the store. I love being there, I love talking to people, and I love helping people with their problems. I love the feeling of helping others and the feeling I get when I’m getting off work and think “Man, it’s been a great day!” Sure, there’s A TON of stress involved and wow did we get ourselves into more than we ever could’ve imagined---but I think all of our customers make it worth it. I hope you all leave with smiles on your faces.
You have to know Hawk to realize just how much this man loves running. Sometimes even I can’t comprehend it. Sometimes it makes my mom (and everyone else) shake her head in bewilderment. It’s ridiculous, but I think it works. Not only does Hawk love running, he loves people. The man "wastes" ridiculous amounts of money just to help people out with their running (it drives the “accounting department” crazy). Anybody who knows him, knows that he just can’t stop talking to people! He just loves hearing what people have to say, and I think they love to hear his crazy stories. To this day, I still hear crazy “Hawk stories” that I’ve never heard before.
We all have so much fun working, and I hope everyone can feel that. Sometimes people tell us the store isn’t very “business-like” or “professional looking”. That’s probably because we aren’t business people and the store isn’t professional, it’s fun! It was never about the money, and I don’t think it ever will be. Besides, anybody thinking of starting a running store (especially one that isn’t very “business-like”) to make a lot of money ought to look into things a lot more closely! The day the store just becomes a business and the day it’s not fun anymore is the day it’s done (and I'm out!). But I don’t think that will happen any time soon---Hawk just loves running (and runners) too much. |
